From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Cass draws us back into the world of "The Selection" (HarperCollins) with this latest series installment. Taking place 20 years after The One (2014), this entry focuses on the lives of Queen America and King Maxon's four children, specifically Princess Eadlyn, who is the heir to the throne. The castes have officially been dissolved, but not without recurring issue, including riots among the people of Ilea. To distract the country and buy time for King Maxon and Queen America to formulate a plan to stop the riots, it's decided that another Selection will take place. Princess Eadlyn is initially not fond of the idea because she is not ready to get married; however she respects her parents' wishes, and wants to do right by her people. She has two caveats: a three-month commitment and an understanding that she may not find a husband in the end. Fans will simultaneously root for and despise Eadlyn. She is powerful, bossy, and vulnerable. While life looks perfect from the outside, readers learn that things are not what they seem. Physical fights break out among the Selected, and secrets are kept only to be revealed at the very end. The cliff-hanger conclusion sets the stage for future volumes. At times the work feels like a retelling of the first book, but with a different cast of characters. However, readers will enjoy seeing the courtship rituals through the eyes of Eadlyn, her date mishaps, and how things have evolved over two decades. VERDICT A great addition for collections that have a high demand for "The Selection" series.—Erin Holt, Williamson County Public Library, Franklin, TN

Cass s immensely readable debut novel is a less drastic Hunger Games, with elaborate fashion and trappings. The fast-paced action will have readers gasping for the upcoming sequel. --ALA Booklist"

A cross between The Hunger Games (minus the bloodsport) and The Bachelor (minus the bloodsport), this trilogy launch is a lot of fun. Cass deftly builds the chemistry between America and Maxon, while stroking the embers of America s first, forbidden love. --Publishers Weekly"

From the Back Cover

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon—and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she'd put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess's life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can't escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn't expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn's heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn't as impossible as she's always thought.

Surprisingly Good Continuation
By Cait Jacobs
The Heir is more of a companion than a continuation of the Selection series.
I must admit, Eadlyn is a frustrating, annoying, and bratty protagonist who I often found myself wishing I could slap, but by the end of the novel, I realized that somewhere along they way she had matured and developed into a tolerable main character who I could root for.
Now, after reading about 35 women chase after 1 man, I was extremely excited to see it play out the other way around. Kiera Cass did not disappoint. I cannot decide which of the several main male characters that I want to be with Eadlyn. I absolutely loved Kile, Henri, Fox, and Hale. And Erik as well but I don't know if he counts as being in the running for her hand.
My absolute favorite part of this novel was, of course, Maxon and America. They were still just as adorable as they were in the first three books. Maxon is still completely devoted to America while America adores Maxon with all of her being. I loved the references to their selection and the shenanigans that occurred.
I desperately need the sequel, especially after that god awful cliff hanger. Seriously, give me more now.
The Heir was a solid 4/5, which is surprising considering it had so much to live up to due to it following the amazing first three Selection books.

The Heir
By Amazon Customer
I love The Selection stories. I loved reading about America & Maxon's love story, their journey, the obstacles that they had to overcome. Amercia, though flawed and sometimes selfish was always a heroine you pulled for despite the situations she put herself in. You couldn't help but root for her. So I was excited to read "The Heir", to read further into America and Maxon's love story--- even if it was told from their daughter's perspective. I can't say that I was completely disappointed, but I am. Their daughter Eadlyn is hard to get to know, I guess it makes sense since that's one of the obstacles that she must overcome--- letting people really in and letting them really get to know her. I can see how showing her the way she is sets up a story for the next book, but it was really hard hoping that she would change only to see her go back to her old ways. The only shining moments in my opinion where when you'd get scenes that America and Maxon were in, when they would reminisce about their Selection or old inside jokes were said. Reading about the other characters from the older books as well. I know I'll probably read the last book, just to hope that Eadlyn will change and be the queen that the people need. But, this book was kind of a let down for me.

Eadlyn was not what I expected
By JexStar336
I picked up this book already preparing myself on not liking Eadlyn. I read so many negative comments about her that I for sure thought she would annoy me as well, since I can be pretty picky about main characters. I was absolutely shocked by how much I ended up loving her. It's true that there were a few times where I thought she was being unfair and snobbish, but her good traits clearly outweigh the bad. She is by far one of the strongest female characters I have ever read.
(Spoilers up ahead!!!) The fact that she has to worry about being queen and always having to look perfect and say the right things at the right time with a camera almost always in her face is impressive enough, but when you add on to the fact that she is forced into a situation where she has to find a mate, has to please her parents, has to deal with not being taken seriously, has to deal with her twin brother leaving her, has to deal with her mother facing life and death and her father in shambles, and also help her other brothers through this is utterly amazing. I keep thinking that she will for sure break down completely and try to run away from it all, but she never does. She has faced so much criticism and insults that it's surprising she is able to get out of bed each day, let alone help run a country. I truly love how complicated and flawed Eadlyn is and there's no doubting that her strength is admirable (at least, to me it is).
Putting her aside, this book was a great read for me. I loved seeing characters again from America's story and I loved how close Eadlyn was to her brothers. Henri is absolutely adorable and I'm surprised to find myself rooting for him. Kile and Hale are great, Erik is amazing and Ean is amusing. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by who Eadlyn ends up picking and I look forward to the final volume!
