The testimonia (all newly translated) are presented in a new selection, designed to clarify the structure of the atomists thought and to present their texts in their argumentative context as far as possible. The notes and commentary aim to reflect the complexity and diversity of their thought, with particular emphasis on their metaphysical foundations, psychology, epistemology and ethics. Democritus revealed

In this book CCW Taylor amends an eons-long dearth of information in English about the greatest philosopher-scientist from antiquity. Popular during the Renaissance and Enlightenment as a source of information and wisdom about scientific principles (feeding Bacon's spirit for the writing of his Novum Organum), Democritus has all but been pushed back into obscurity by the triumph of English 19th century Platonism and the concomitant recrudescence of Aristotlian studies. Denied even a word of mention by Plato but acknowledged several times in the Aristotelian corpus as the greatest of his predecessors (but uncredited as the guide for much of what Aristotle observed, thought, and wrote) Democritus (and his follower Epicurus) suffered unmercifully at the hands of Christian authors whose judgments stilled monastic hands from re-copying his texts.
Professor Taylor has taken the pitifully small remnant of fragments from a once voluminous oeuvre, and the few notices about Democritus written by Diogenes Laertius, Galen, the Aristotelians, Roman authors, and Church fathers and arranged them in a sensible order with English translations of the fragments which also appear in Greek and with the notices fully translated (no Greek). There are judiciously written notes on the central issues of atomism, on Democritus's ethical works, and on cruxes in the texts. There is a general index, an annotated index of ancient works from which the citations are taken, an index to the footnotes and commentary on the testimonia, a concordance of Taylor's with other systems of enumerating the fragments and notices (Diels-Kranz, Luria), and a bibliography.
Surely this book is a must reference source for anyone who seriously studies the Pre-Socratic philsophers and is well worth the inflated price that academic presses charge for books whose sales will be limited to libraries and scholars.
The only disappointment I will register is Taylor's cursory treatment of the problem of Leucippus's historicity. Here his judgment is wrong, and he fails fully to discuss the issues and the evidence.

A Valuable Addition

This is a very needed book for those of us deeply involved with Democritus. Several translations of these fragments exist, but the Greek text is needed in order to check out various key words that various English versions translate differently.

The book is breathtakingly expensive, but you get what you pay for these days. The scholarship is first class, and the book itself is nicely made.

He has operated from the systems integrator side, but most of his experience has come from managing very large-scale SAP projects for implementing companies. Industries involved include life sciences, consumer-packaged goods, electronics, and financial services. His past experience as a professor in graduate schools of management and as a quality improvement executive contribute to a unique perspective and broad contextual knowledge of the challenges of implementation.

He has a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Dr. Sullivan is the president of SAP Global Consultants, a consultancy offering project management advisory services to implementing companies. He can be reached at jerry@sapglobalconsultants.com.

This is probably the most comprehensive and readable SAP Project Guide I have ever read. The level of detail about how to ACTUALLY plan and structure a project is outstanding. I've worked with Jerry in the past and have real world experience that these strategies and techniques work and you can deliver your project.If you can't get Jerry...get this book.

I strongly recommend this book. It will be very useful and helpful for those who are SAP freshman to senior level. Also the management experience the author share will be very good advice for consultants and technique experts who want to boost themselves and then enter management level but lack management experience.

About the Author
Norbert Wolf graduated in art history, linguistics and medieval studies at the universities of Regensburg and Munich, and earned his PhD in 1983. Very good this book about German Expressionism, an influent movement in Modern and Contemporary Art. Specially the paintings are very well analised by the author, after a brief introducing about the movement's history. The painting's pictures reproduction is superb, the book very well edited.

This is one of the best books on Expressionism. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but enough
so that you get a good idea of the period and quite a few of the artists. I would recommend this
book to anyone wanting to get a taste of Expressionism.

About the Author
Timothy J. Shannon teaches Early American, Native American, and British history at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including Iroquois Diplomacy on the Early American Frontier (2008) and Indians and Colonists at the Crossroads of Empire: The Albany Congress of 1754 (2000), which won the Dixon Ryan Fox Prize from the New York State Historical Association and the Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Colonial Wars.� His articles have appeared in the William and Mary Quarterly, the New England Quarterly, and Ethnohisto.

The Seven Years' War in North America: A Brief History with Documents

This book is outstanding in every way and should be used in every college or school in America to try to teach students about the American phase of what Winston Churchill referred to as the first world war. Earlier generations have been deprived of, or not taken advantage of, the opportunity to learn about this most important and decisive war, which settled the score in many ways between France and England in America and elsewhere in the 18th century, and laid the foundation for the American Revolution. Use of the various source documents for the commentary is an extremely effective way to teach the subject, as well as, hopefully, to instill curiosity in the students to read other such documents to improve their understanding of this most important era and critically examine this period of our nation's history. This book is accurate, concise, and easily read and covers all topics from the French perspective, the complicated American Indian confederacies to Braddock's defeat, British campaigns and the seeds of Pontiac's rebellion. It thoroughly covers the subject with good references to continue learning about the events of this time, as well as to inspire students to learn about the related happenings in Europe which dominated the efforts of France to try to protect its interest there at the expense of the loss of New France. This book is not only useful for students in their studies, but for the rest of as as a ready reference and overall guide in our further reading of this era. It certainly serves as a good primer to launch into more detailed books, such as Fred Anderson's wonderful work, The Crucible of War:The Seven Years' War and the Fate of Empire in British North America, 1754-1766.

Excellent Reference

Dr Colby has more facts at his fingers than any home brewer I know, and I really enjoy his writing. His experience is evident, and as a result his book will prove a valuable reference for the home brewer. The recipes are a good starting point when experimenting with different styles, and I know I’ll have a lot of fun brewing them.

Something for the experienced brewer as well as the novice.

I've been digging into this book since it came out and I have a growing list of recipes that I want to brew. This book has everything. There are the standard recipes here that have been tested many times, and there are several unconventional recipes that are worth a look. This is an excellent addition to my brewing library.

Finally a plan that not only works, but put me in the right direction to healthy eating for life!

I purchased this plan after reading a excerpt about how unsweetened cranberry juice assists in losing fat cells and diminishing cellulite. I followed the first two weeks to a tee, drinking hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice before breakfast and dinner, and the long life cocktail of high-lignan flaxseed oil combined with the cranberry water. (You get used to it.) The recipes encouraged me to start my day with a healthier breakfast and enjoy a healthy snack between meals. The results have been amazing, as of today (six weeks after beginning the plan), I am 17 pounds lighter. My skin looks amazing and yes, the cellulite is dimenishing. My stomach is smaller and I no longer feel bloated throughout the day. Keep in mind, although I work fulltime, I do swim every day when I come home...and this was not newly added to the plan. This is proof to me the plan is not only healthy but greatly contributing to my overall health for life.

I love this diet! I've lost 15 pounds in less than two months and I wasn't really overweight.

I had already lost 60 pounds well over a year ago and wasn't loosing anymore weight. I tried everything; Atkins diet, Susan Summers cleansing diet, I ate right and exercised 5-7 days a week. This "Plateau" last close to a year. I lift weights and did cardio all in around 60-80 minutes a workout. I wouldn't have been described as fat, I think most would say I was muscular but I wanted to get lean. This diet is simple if you prepare. I'm hardly ever hungry. I have decided this will be a diet I pretty much stay on permenantly. So I am 5'7" and 49 years old. I weighed 192lbs on July 30th and as of today I am 176lbs. I hardly ever cheated on the diet, that's important. I love this diet. IF you do this diet, FOLLOW THE RULES with regards to Stevia Plus, Cranberry water, and supplements. YOU WILL LOOSE WEIGHT.

Such a treasure find!!!! I have tried many diets, but this one has a purpose and made total sense to me. My husband and I have lost 20 pounds each within a couple of months. The recipes are GREAT! We don't feel like we are on a "diet". I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle and shed a few pounds in the process.
