The 10th in Geary's ongoing, multi–Eisner-nominated historical murder series, Famous Players tells the story of one of the first major Hollywood scandals. Silent film actor/director William Desmond Taylor was killed in his home in February 1922, not long after popular actor Fatty Arbuckle was also accused of murder. Geary presents the facts of the case in a series of historical chapters, offering up bungled investigative tactics, dead-end leads and a colorful cast of characters, all for the reader to analyze. His quirky b&w ink drawings are full of expression, recalling the melodrama of silent films and giving life to such characters as actresses Mary Miles Minter and Mabel Normand and other early film business insiders. The narrative presents this murder, along with the Arbuckle case, as the beginning of Hollywood's lurid history, which he evokes with a series of plates depicting actors whose tragic deaths are noted beneath. By including not only the Black Dahlia but Natalie Wood, River Phoenix and Phil Hartman, he drives home the point that Hollywood has never escaped its dark past. (Aug.)

Not Juicy or Nutritional But Worth a Look

I thought this would be more in depth. It's a little cursory, though. I didn't come away with a deeper understanding of this case than I did from reading various blogs and websites. The art was nice and the story flowed well, though, and to its credit I will read others in the series.

I'd like to see a dramatistion of MM and her mother's later years. Seems very Grey Gardens to me.

Very well done, from every aspect.

Famous Players is very well done and is highly recommended. The story is presented in such a manner as to be very accessible to readers who have no previous knowledge of early Hollywood or any of the characters involved in the case. The book presents a very broad overview of the Taylor case, contains a relatively high degree of accuracy, and is presented in a straightforward, informative and crisp manner.

As a graphic novel evoking the Hollywood atmosphere of the 1920's, the book holds up quite well. Any affectionado of the Taylor case will naturally find things to quibble about (I wish Geary had included the Margaret Gibson confession), and the book could have been more enjoyable in color. But as an artistic general introduction to the complexities of the Taylor case, Famous Players is a success.

Wielding their swords in the name of their faith, the crusaders originally set out to reclaim Jerusalem and its surrounding territory in the Middle East. Increasingly, however, Eastern Europe and the last remaining bastions of pagan Europe became the targets of their religious zeal.

The era officially began in 1147, when the Saxons, Danes, and Poles, responding to Pope Eugene III's call, initiated a crusade against the Wends of the Southern Baltic. This was followed by crusades against the Livonians, Estonians, Finns, Prussians, and Lithuanians. By the 13th century much of the responsibility for sustaining these crusades fell to the Teutonic Knights, a military order formed in the Holy Land in 1190. They were aided by the constant support of the Roman pontiff and by a steady flow of mercenaries from throughout Christendom.

The subsequent Scandinavian campaigns laid the foundations of modern Baltic society by destroying pagan rural farming settlements, and establishing fortified Christian towns and major castles. As with the majority of crusades, the prospective acquisition of land and power was the one of the key driving forces behind these bloody military expeditions.

This book reveals the colorful history of these Crusades when the soldiers of the Pope fought their way across Eastern Europe and inexorably changed the future of the continent.

About the Author

David Lindholm MA, was born in 1970. He was educated at the University of Lund in Sweden where he studied medieval archaeology, history and ethnology. He is also a specialist of medieval weaponry and warfare.

David Nicolle was born in 1944 and worked in the BBC Arabic service for a number of years, before gaining an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and a doctorate from Edinburgh University. He has written many books and articles on medieval and Islamic warfare.

Wonderful book

I am Lithuanian and I had been told that Lithuania lost her huge land because of fighting with Poland. This book corrected that thinking. It is simple, but clear. Again the Catholic Church ruined an Empire. The Swedes couldn't wait to attack the peaceful Baltic Countries and they got permission from the Catholic Church to do just that. These were countries who were trading nicely and hurting no one. The countries of Finland, Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Poland were attacked. Why? Because they were not Christians yet. What happened to the teachings of Jesus to go out and preach to nations about the good news? No lets just kill them and force it down their throats. This is what this book shows and it does a great job. Colorful pictures and real nice descriptions.

This is must reading for those interested in cinematography.

Kris Malkiewicz has assembled some of the finestcinematographers and gaffers in the world to create a must-have bookfor all aspiring and working Directors of Photography. This book is both technical and creative in description of design and technique. From Nestor Almendros, ASC to Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and other contemporary greats in-between--the reader learns lighting of sets, close-ups, background plates and much more. Both soft-light and hard-light techniques are covered too. Reading the meter is discussed by Caleb Deshanel, ASC who states, "Basically I use the meter after I have finished lighting" to Malkiewicz who states, "a caucasian face has about 35 percent reflectance, but a black face reflects less than 16 percent." He goes on to explain the proper technique for exposing dissimilar facial colors with reflective metering. The late James Wong Howe, ASC and Jordan Cronenweth, ASC are quoted describing their day-for-night techniques. All in all this book covers the basics and beyond and has served me well as a reference book that I consult from time to time, and recommend to others.

Not just a dull technical book . . . very interesting . . .

I am an aspiring D.P., interested in lighting and camera operation. This book gives a good insight to the relationship between D.P. and director. It does not give dull "how to set up lights," but provides some interesting information provided by some outstanding cinematographers, many are members of ASC. I found it to be an excellent read.

A definate must read for cinematographers and directors

I am a director and found this book to be really intersting. I really enjoyed hearing advice and techniques from a collection of accomplished cinematographers and gaffers. Too many books just merely point out that there are many ways to approach lighting a scene. This actually shows how different people choose to light particular scenes.
The only complaint that I have is that it is a bit out-dated. Personally, I use a lot of newer lighting equipment that was not mentioned (especially Kino Flo lights). Nevertheless, still probably the best lighting book I have encountered.

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR, Don Wulpi: A metallurgical consultant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Donald J. Wulpi, studied and analyzed failures of metal parts for more than 45 years. A graduate of Lehigh University, with a degree in metallurgical engineering, he spent most of his working life in several metallurgical laboratories of the International Harvester Co., now Navistar International Corporation. In retirement, Mr. Wulpi devoted himself to teaching the principles of failure analysis at the ASM International headquarters, in Materials Park, Ohio, and at various companies throughout the United States. He testified as an expert witness in product litigation cases for many years.

ABOUT THE EDITOR: Brett Miller is a metallurgical engineer with degrees from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is a registered Professional Engineer in several states. For over 28 years Brett has worked as a failure analyst, metallurgist and expert witness, completing thousands of failure analysis investigations. He has authored numerous publications including book chapters and journal articles. Brett has been active in ASM International since 1984, and is a former chairman of the ASM Failure Analysis Committee. He is also active in NACE International and AWS. He has experience in aerospace, oilfield and commercial laboratories. Brett is currently the Technical Director at IMR Metallurgical Services in Louisville, Kentucky.
