Not to be missed
By A Customer
Here is what International Master Jeremy Silman, who reviews chess books on another site, said about this book. He said it better than I could.
"Most endgame books are over the heads of the normal tournament player. Most are boring. Most are completely useless. Soltis' book, however, is a rare mixture of entertainment, deep instruction, and grand design. The typesetting is excellent, the layout shows lots of care, the many drawings are absolutely wonderful, and the actual print is easy on the eye.
The subtitle of this book is "Everything you need to know about the endgame," and Soltis tries very hard to make good on this promise. In my opinion, this is the best endgame book ever written for the amateur player. A must buy!"

Socratic method gone awry!!
By Amazon Customer
This book has been given very good reviews by some respected authors and chess bloggers. I have to be honest, I did not like it. Soltis is trying too hard to be clever with the characters and dialogue he has created for his attempt at a socratic method book. The only problem is that these dialogues are too cute and just distract the reader from what little instruction can be found in the book. The examples are not explained very well either. It was difficult for this reader to find any congruency between the dialogues and the examples.
I much prefer "Just the Facts" by Lev Alburt and the superb "Silman's Complete Endgame Course" by Jeremy Silman. "Pandolfini's Endgame Course" is even better than Soltis' book!! These books give you the information and then encourage you to explore the positions for yourself (especially Silman's book!)
All that being said, I am still looking forward to diving into Soltis' two recent books, "Why Lasker Matters", and "Bobby Fischer Re-Discovered"! This particular endgame book was just not my cup of tea.

Don't waste your money
By A. Field
This book has to be the worst chess book of all time. 75% of the content consists of inane discussion between the author and a fictious pupil, containing no insight or relevance to chess whatsoever.
The analysis of positions is extremely scant; typically one or two lines of play only, looking ahead just four moves.
A more appropriate title for the book would be "Secrets for Players Rated Below 1200". For example, the book contains such wonderful insights as "Passed pawns increase in value as they progress further down the board" - hardly the insight of a grandmaster.
Don't waste your money.
