He was a bad one. Nobody said any different than that. Just bad. He was a bony runt of about eighteen, with bulging eyes and a wide mouth that was always turned down at the corners. He got his nickname Buck because he had buck teeth, not because he was heap man. He was some handy with his fists, and he liked to pick ruckuses with kids he was sure he could lick. But the tipoff on Buck is that he'd bleat like a two-day calf to get out of mixing with somebody he was scared of—which meant somebody his own size or bigger. He'd jaw his way out of it, or just turn and slink away with his tail along his belly. His dad had died a couple years before, and he lived with his ma on a small ranch out near the Pass. The place was falling to pieces, because Buck wouldn't lift a hand to do any work around—his ma just couldn't handle him at all.

The Draw
By Elizabeth Zozaya
What a great short story! I felt as if I had been transported to the wild west for an afternoon! I could almost hear the voice of Joe Doolin, the story teller. Buck Tarrant, the loco gun slinger, was "a stone's throw" away from my mind's eye. Reading this story was like watching an episode of "Twilight Zone", "Outer Limits", or "One Step Beyond". I'm looking forward to reading another captivating story by Jerome Bixby.

For a short story, a book it isn't, it's right up there with Harte & Clemens. I thank you for a good read. FDJ

I'm going to read more of this writers works, may I find them!
With some little effort, his work will stand equal to L'Amour and even Grey.
Hopefully there is more good stories, like this one in novel length form.
Looking forward to finding them. I won't hesitate a moment, nor should you.

Wild west science fiction
By Rayge
This short story is set in the wild west. Perhaps that's why it is less obvious that this is of the mid-twentieth century science fiction genre. It survives without many cultural "errors". For the price, free, it's a good read.
