Truly different and probing on the practice of astrology

I learned so much from this book! Here are the reasons I gave it five stars:
(1) The book begins in the logical place: what does a good astrologer's chart look like? While Uranus gets its due, the discussion of Saturn is excellent. Robert ties it directly what makes a truly "professional" astrologer.

(2) The book makes the most important things simple and straightforward: "What you offer clients depends on your philosophy about astrology. Because astrology IS a philosophy." It goes on to discuss fate and free will in depth, showing how an astrologer MUST be clear on this in order to help a client see the broad developmental scope of their lives, rather than do some kind of fortune-telling.

(3) It seems strange that an astrologer would stand out for seeing planetary movement, for what could be more essential? Here, the continuous interactions of the planets are seen as a beautiful moving tapestry, where every thread points to the whole cloth, and the whole cloth illuminates every thread. The book’s mantra is: "make something out of everything you see." The author finds depth and meaning in every last shifting detail of the chart. His work is a revelation to me in this way.

(4) The author calls what he does "developmental astrology:" astrology is about the time and movement of our lives, from birth to death and beyond. This inspires me by going beyond a static view of the chart more than any other book I've read.

(5) The book shows me how an astrologer must be a psychologist. Carl Jung's idea of "synchronicity" and the four elements is made fully alive and down to earth in the details of the chart. It shows how astrology takes into account much more than Jung. There is a deep and pointed discussion of modern psychiatric diagnosis that is a joy to read. The use of synchronicity with "psychosomatic" illness brought greater clarity to my thinking about this.

(5) The author rightly insists on the necessity of an accurate birth time. His approach to rectification is a gem. Buy the book for this if for nothing else!

A word of warning to both astrologers and doubters: this one-of-a-kind book will shake up everything you thought you knew about astrology. This book took me to the depths, yet entertained, and the read was easy as a breeze. Someday I hope this book will be recognized for the classic it is.

I so agree with Michaels review. Robert is a great practical astrologer that helps you to see how a chart can sing to you. Of all the well known teachers that I have had, I doubt they are as good or as sharing it all as Robert. You can not go wrong with this book.

Parody, Robert Chambers reminds us in this approachable, eccentric, self-deprecating, and mildly megalomaniac book, is one of the few literary terms that come down to us from ancient Greece, where it means something like “beside-or-against song,” Certainly Chambers has taken the license of its antiquity to extend the scope of parody way beyond what most people have taken it to mean up to this point. It is not to be confined to the minor and disreputable genre beloved of nineteenth-century litt�rateurs and the New Statesman/New Yorker. This is because it is not to be confined to a genre at all, since it is in fact a pervasive technique characteristic of all literary periods, possibly even of all language use, which works to combine or play off one convention or set of conventions against another. Its scope is therefore very wide indeed, encompassing children’s mimicry, all of the traditionally designated parodic genres (so: mock-epic, comic epic, burlesque, travesty, spoof, lampoon and hoax - though it’s not itself a genre), word-play and puns, much of the history of the novel, skaz, film adaptations, imitations, Dada, self-reflexive art, and what we know as modernism and postmodernism. Parody is characteristically multistable, that is, it permits or encourages several perspectives simultaneously, thus challenging the linearity of Western thought in favour of the Yin and Yang of Daoism; it is the principal means by which genres get exploded and new genres develop; and its pervasiveness has only been overlooked by criticism since the Romantics because of extraordinary critical myopia (not to say stupidity. Chambers undertakes to remedy this myopia, more perhaps in hope than expectation, and does so with wit, wild erudition, much repetition, and lots of diagrams.

About the Author
Robert Chambers is Adjunct Assistant Professor of English at Kennesaw State University. A graduate of Princeton University, he earned his masters and doctorate in modern British and American literature at Indiana University. He has been a correspondent for The Economist and a reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he won a national fellowship competition.

Comprehensive and surprising

This study will certainly enhance your understanding, not just of parody, but of the Western literary canon. It's easy to forget the myriad tendrils that bind literary monoliths to antecedents, and Chambers's excursion through every level of parodic reference is a fascinating and educational reminder. My only criticism, in fact, lies in this broad scope and wide conception of the book's central term. By the last page, one might find it hard to imagine an instance of intertextual reference that could *not* be conceived as parodic.

The best book on a serial killer I have ever read.

This book is not for the timid. However, if you truely want to get into the mind of a serial killer, this is the book for you. Of all the books I have read on the subject, this offered the most insight into the mind of the actual killer. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down.

psychopath

This is no doubt one of the best true crime books ever. It delves deep into the mind of Andrei Chikatilo and gives us information about why he did it, if there ever is a reason to do these horrible crimes.

Worst of all is that if the police hadn't been so inadequate, Chikatilo would have been in jail after his first kill. They were so sure that Kravchenko, a man who lived in Chikatilo's street, was guilty of the murder. Chikatilo went on to kill 52 more people. The search for this serial killer was almost impossible, because the police didn't receive support from the Communist Party, who denied that there was such a thing as a serial killer in Russia. That only happened in America.

As others have said, this is not for the weak hearted. It is graphic and uncensored, and you will be shocked. I know I was.

Portrait of Russia's notorious serial killer

In November 1990, Russian police finally arrested the man they believed to have been behind the brutal killings and mutilations of several children and young men and women ranging from age 9 to early twenties. The man was Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo, a Ukraine-born supply clerk in his mid-fifties, who lured his victims with promises of a nice meal at his dacha in the woods, assaulted, stabbed his victims with knives multiple times, poked their eyes out, and calmly disposed of the body. Under questioning, he admitted to 53 murders, which could've been up to 70. This book traces Chikatilo's life, his reign of terror (1978-1990), and why he evaded captured for twelve years.
Having been born during the man-created famine of the Stalinist USSR, and having witnessed the kidnapping of his older brother Stepan, who was eaten by starving peasants, and thus made to stay inside the house for fear of suffering the same fate, it's no wonder that Chikatilo grew up with a damaged psyche. His impotence and premature ejaculation no doubt led to further humility, humility that wouldn't have boiled into a rage of unfulfillment and thence to horrific murder, had medically curing impotency been legal in the Soviet Union. Indeed it was lucky enough that he and his wife bore two children, and that his wife was a modest, patient, and understanding woman. Alas, that wasn't enough, it seems.
The book also examines the flaws inherent in the Soviet police system. People suspected of a crime on circumstantial evidence, yet having an airtight alibi can be made to confess. This happened to Aleksandr Kravchenko, an ex-con who committed rape and murder but was under 18 so served his time, had seen the error of his ways and was now a good citizen. Unfortunately, he lived on the same street as Chikatilo, his house was also near the river where Chikatilo's first victim was, and his wife, brought in on trumped-up charges of stealing, was forced to change her testimony regarding her husband's whereabouts. Further, Kravchenko was beaten up in prison and threatened with rape by a decoy used to elicit confessions, and confessed to a crime he never committed, for which he was executed.
Another example is the immunity given to Party members from crimes. Party membership was quite a mark of status in the Soviet Union. And the emphasis of scientific evidence, then dated, worked for Chikatilo. The police was looking for someone of blood type AB, and due to a medical anomaly, Chikatilo's blood was A, with the B antigen more prominent in his hair and saliva--hence the evidence was enough to drop any murder charges against him. One police captain might have been credited with his capture, but he acted more on intuition and common sense (his seeing Chikatilo's behaviour at the train station and panic when asked to produce his documents), and that unfortunately isn't scientific.
Comparisons/contrasts between him and John Wayne Gacy are interesting, as it highlights the difference between American and Soviet sociology. After Gacy was caught for his first offense back in the 60's, he served his time and was released, presumably cured (alas it was not to be). Chikatilo was known for fondling the girls at the school he taught and once was caught assaulting a 14-year old in a lake, grabbing at her, yet nothing was done about his behaviour--it was just seen as one of his odd quirks(!)
The conclusion was that Chikatilo was three personalities in one. One was the ordinary family man, the other was the rapist/murderer, and the third was the one who acted insane when put on trial for his heinous crimes. The authors do a good job in maintaining the chronology and gathering of information, painting an effective portrait of Chikatilo, and using narrative reconstructions of two killings in gruesome detail, yet the lack of bibliography and sources makes the book somewhat questionable.

Excellent reference book

Mildred Johnson does something many, if not most, algebra books fail to do. Give the students not just an explanation of how to solve word problems but she gives the students enough problems of the same kind to practice so they can get the pattern engrained in their mind. I have used her book as a reference for my algebra classes for years and highly recommend it.

Excellent supplement for Algebra Textbooks

As an algebra teacher for 30 years, having taught at the junior high, high school and college levels, I have observed that students struggle with word problems more consistently than any other area. This book is the best source I've seen for alleviating some of the stress and difficulties students have with word problems. It makes an excellent supplement to any elementary or intermediate algebra textbook.

I'm very happy with this book. It does just what it promises: teaches kids how to solve word problems in beginning-level algebra. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was in school. It gives detailed explanations which are easy to understand.

A Success-Through-Service Book of the First Order

Secret Service is one of the few business books (that is not a narrative case study) that is actually enjoyable to read. John Dijulius, owner of John Robert's Hair Studio & Spa, comments on how his business and many others see customer service not as a necessary evil but as integral to (if not entirely) their product.
While the hair and spa industry is primarily a service industry, Dijulius goes far beyond, dealing with how retail and even distribution companies can better serve their customers and the rewards that those who do will reap. His examples include some of the more obvious ones practitioners as Southwest Airlines and Nordstrom's as well as a number of lesser-known businesses from a variety of industries. In many cases, he highlights businesses that he has had personal experience with, thus illustrating how a satisfied customer can be much more profitable than any marketing that you can buy.
Dijulius also highlights the economics of increasing the value of (and to) your existing customers by reminding them when they may need a product or service and making sure that they are happy after the purchase. He highlights a variety of systems that he and others use to do this such as follow-up thank you cards, newsletters and personalized notes on invoices.
He also reminds us that employee satisfaction is just as important as customer satisfaction (and in fact, directly leads to customer satisfaction). He highlights systems that his spa has used to retain their best employees and avoid the expense of training, while ensuring consistent service quality for their customers.
This is a how to serve your customer better and grow your business book of the first order. More importantly, it is concise, personable, and remarkably enjoyable to read. This is a must read for anyone working at or managing a business that wants more customers.

Brilliant!

Every business deals with a customer, therefore every business provides a form of customer service--how good is yours? No matter what level you're on, reading this book will certainly improve it! DiJulius has incredble insight into connecting different industries to benefit not only each other, but their customers as well. These ideas, while incredibly brilliant, are easy to understand and implement. I have found the information to be so profound that I've actually revamped our company's orientation for new employees based on it!

I require my staff to read this book when they are hired. This is one of my favorite business books!

Not much use for any design work G. Randy Slone's book much better

I purchased this book along with High Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual by G. Randy Slone.If you want to read about

300 pages of information you can obtain free from Mr. Self's website then buy all means by this book because it is a repeat of the blamless amplifier theory, however if you really want a design book with the whyfore's included Mr. Slone's book is the book for you and should rate 10 stars for audio design. I really don't understand why Amazon hyped this book. I should have saved my money I expected more from Mr. Self.

The book is very deep in some topics but is very poor in design formulas. The formulas should be included, explained and can be skipped by the readers who are not keen on mathematics.

Some schematic diagrams are simply not readable as the printing size, or the book format, is too small.

Excellent in-depth exploration of many points of audio power amp design. Very clearly written, though does assume basic electronic and audio knowledge. Cordell covers some of the same points, but the two books complement each other and it is worth reading both.

This book of Aneta Lastik has changed my life (I have read it in Polish a few years ago).
I share the opinion of psychologist about this book that:
"The main idea of the book by Aneta Lastik is: when we have problems with our voice, we have problems with ourselves. Voice is a litmus paper reflecting the mental state of the patient. According to the Author, everybody can learn to sing in tune, but those who are out of tune, do not ‘give voice’ to the ‘disliked’ part of their personality. In most cases this part includes features that their parents did not like (...)
The book will undoubtedly be interesting for people, whose voice is a main work tool (actors, radio and TV newscasters, politicians, teachers), and professionals analyzing voice as a problem (phoniatrists, speech therapists). I believe that also some psychologists and therapists should read this book in order to ‘hear’ what the Author says about them and their work".

Cookie-Cuttering Organizational Culture into a One-Size-Fits-All Pyramid of Buzz-Word Ubiquity.

• Executive Summary
This is a review of Change the Culture, Change the Game: The Breakthrough Strategy for Energizing Your Organization and Creating Accountability for Results, by Roger Connors and Tom Smith. The target audience of the book is business professionals interested in developing a culture of accountability within an organization. In my opinion the strengths of this book are few, though conceptually the authors propose a foundational, though rudimentary, structure describing how one might go about inciting cultural change. That said, there are too many weaknesses to justify suffering through the long winded “real-life” examples that compose the bulk of most chapters; specifically the outdated concepts that are the core of the material presented, the oversimplification of the information’s utility as applicable to all business cultures, and the incessant lists, methods and systems the authors advertise as essential to the process of instilling a culture of accountability. There are so many better choices in this field of study that I cannot comfortably recommend the book; not even as foundational reference material.

• Who is the book written for?

The book is written in such a way that makes me suspect that the authors were providing high level leaders something to distribute among their subordinate managers as required reading when approaching the topic of change management through cultural development. Therefore, I was not surprised at the many customer reviews stating that they were, in fact, encouraged by a manager or boss to give it a read and explain the large brush strokes to their direct reports and teams. Of course, the publishing company, hoping to sell a copy to every business person on the planet, touts it as useful material to the everyman business person who desires to instill the virtue of accountability in the souls of their organizations.

• Specific Strengths of the Book

I believe that Change the Culture, Change the Game would be best suited as an introductory read for managers within an organization that has become so stagnant in their culture that they require immediate and drastic alterations to abate disaster. It presents some basic concepts and fills in the blanks with descriptive, though, as previously stated, long winded, allegory that fail to construct a complete plan of action. This being the case, one would expect that it might spark an interest in some of its audience and encourage them to look deeper into the topics presented, thereby becoming the initial stepping stone that might provide a manager the tools necessary to understand and effect real change in an organization’s culture.

• Specific Weaknesses of the Book

The material presented is dated, and as far from the forefront in the field of organizational behavior as VHS tape is to media delivery methodology. I was extremely disappointed to find that the 2012 edition didn’t add fundamentally to the original printing of the book in 2001, even though so much progress has been made in this field in the past decade. I very much dislike books that present themselves as ‘the’ authority on a topic, promising innovative techniques and cutting edge strategic insights, but deliver nothing more than a regurgitation of outmoded information. I found the recommendations of the authors to be elementary, effectively cookie-cuttering something as complex and unique as an organization’s corporate culture into a one-size-fits-all pyramid of buzz-word ubiquity.

• What Other Reviewers Have Said for and Against the Book and Your Reply

As one would expect, the majority of reviews on Amazon.com are generally positive, some of which appear to be contrived by those who stood to benefit from book sales. However, I did notice that in many of the positive reviews, my sentiments were echoed in part or in their entirety, but for whatever reason, the reviewer still gave the book the coveted 5 star rating. The 1 star ratings seemed more sincere and in line with my own experience. The endorsements pages within the book itself ~ 4 pages of praise from renowned business leaders and industry heavy hitters comprise the first 4 pages of the text~ are all resoundingly positive and recommend it highly as a must read. Then again the publisher wouldn’t have been doing a very good job of marketing the product had they used anything but the shiny polished ones, therefore I discount them wholeheartedly. And finally, the initial 2001 edition received recognition as both a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. Frankly, way back then, I might have personally helped them achieve that standing.

• Recommendations
Though I would not recommend this particular book, I feel that this is a continuously evolving and exciting field of study with value and practical application to every organization, large and small. Therefore, I might suggest that people start where I did in my journey of behavioral discovery, and read anything written by John Kotter; starting with the revamped edition of Leading Change, while being sure not to miss The Heart of Change: Real-Life Stories of How People Change Their Organizations, or Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding under Any Conditions all of which available on Amazon.com. Save a tree and buy them used.

Leverage your results - as a leader of your team

Truth is simple and we have heard it more than once, not what is counts, what it looks like counts. And culture is part of look and feel inside and out. Even more, it duplicates itself, it spreads and grows.

As any growing force, culture needs guidance. Change the culture, change the game gives valuable insights how to direct the culture in an organisation, how to mobilize your people for the good. It's a must hear (and read) when you lead a team or organisation and it challenges you to proceed.

Great work, highly recommended for leaders in any field. Give your team the force of a direction and they'll love it.
