He argues that, given increasing global interdependence coupled with emerging information technology, professionals in the public and private sector must re-examine their responsibility to larger society. Thus, integrity in professional work includes the social dimensions of caring for people and purposes and making commitments to the social good. Sullivan is a professor at LaSalle University and has previously coauthored thoughtful works such as The Good Society (1991), which analyzes our social institutions, and Habits of the Heart (1985), which considers individualism and commitment. Here he reflects on the role of professionals and the idea of professionalism in today's society. He traces the rise of professionalism and considers what it means to be a professional. He also muses over whether the decline in professional ethics and standards is the cause or the result of a general social malaise; consequently, Sullivan issues a call for those in the professions to return to the values that originally defined professionalism. Important Content!

I bought this book to fulfill a college course reading requirement. I found it a little difficult to read and get through. This is disappointing since the content is of extreme interest to me. I am still reading it because I want to read the entire book but I believe the issue lies in the way it's been written. The author makes some great points! I feel it could use simpler verbiage and better editing.

Very wordy. Hard to follow. Felt like he was intentionally talking over our heads. Too idealistic.

I continually felt that Sullivan was trying to make a case for expanding the scope of pedagogy at the graduate and post graduate level. Liberal arts programs at the undergraduate level are a fine thing but not when they are designed to train individuals who attend these colleges for the sole purpose of exploring a range of subjects - to think like him - it starts to feel more like subterranean indoctrination. I think this is what's killing liberal arts programs. To turn society around we need to facilitate autonomy through offering students the material and letting them think for themselves. Much of Sullivan's thesis seems to be based on the philosophy of John Dewey who was a devout christian and who believed that it was the teachers role to dispense morality and virtue. He nimbly bypasses William James, father of modern pragmatism and I had to wonder if it was because James was not the "good student" that Dewey was. James was more of a renegade; like Paraselsus.

This new area of technology has been defined as Big Data Science and Analytics, and the industrial and academic communities are realizing this as a competitive technology that can generate significant new wealth and opportunity. Big data is defined as collections of datasets whose volume, velocity or variety is so large that it is difficult to store, manage, process and analyze the data using traditional databases and data processing tools. Big data science and analytics deals with collection, storage, processing and analysis of massive-scale data. Industry surveys, by Gartner and e-Skills, for instance, predict that there will be over 2 million job openings for engineers and scientists trained in the area of data science and analytics alone, and that the job market is in this area is growing at a 150 percent year-over-year growth rate. We have written this textbook, as part of our expanding "A Hands-On Approach"(TM) series, to meet this need at colleges and universities, and also for big data service providers who may be interested in offering a broader perspective of this emerging field to accompany their customer and developer training programs. The typical reader is expected to have completed a couple of courses in programming using traditional high-level languages at the college-level, and is either a senior or a beginning graduate student in one of the science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields. Part I provides an introduction to big data, applications of big data, and big data science and analytics patterns and architectures. This new methodology forms the pedagogical foundation of this book. Part II introduces the reader to various tools and frameworks for big data analytics, and the architectural and programming aspects of these frameworks, with examples in Python. We describe Publish-Subscribe messaging frameworks (Kafka & Kinesis), Source-Sink connectors (Flume), Database Connectors (Sqoop), Messaging Queues (RabbitMQ, ZeroMQ, RestMQ, Amazon SQS) and custom REST, WebSocket and MQTT-based connectors. The reader is introduced to data storage, batch and real-time analysis, and interactive querying frameworks including HDFS, Hadoop, MapReduce, YARN, Pig, Oozie, Spark, Solr, HBase, Storm, Spark Streaming, Spark SQL, Hive, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery. Also described are serving databases (MySQL, Amazon DynamoDB, Cassandra, MongoDB) and the Django Python web framework. Part III introduces the reader to various machine learning algorithms with examples using the Spark MLlib and H2O frameworks, and visualizations using frameworks such as Lightning, Pygal and Seaborn.

About the Author
Arshdeep Bahga is a Research Scientist with Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests include cloud computing and big data analytics. Arshdeep has authored several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of cloud computing and big data. Vijay Madisetti is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Vijay is a Fellow of the IEEE, and received the 2006 Terman Medal from the American Society of Engineering Education and HP Corporation.

Suitable for use as an introductory Big Data Analytics textbook

There are very few comprehensive and current books about the broad
range of Big Data Analytics which are suitable for use as university
textbooks for the the subject. Bahga and Madisetti's book is an
exception, introducing the characteristics of Big Data projects,
surveying modern analytic concepts and methods, and including a
variety of illustrative and relevant case studies. While not going
into great depth on the use of specific software tools, the book
does provide enough introductory guidance for further exploration
of such topics as Hadoop, NoSQL, and many of their related tools
for data management and analysis. Additional tool-specific references
can then be used to augment their coverage.

The authors' explanations are clear with numerous helpful diagrams
and code examples using Python and other programs. They include
brief instructions for using online Big Data services such as those
provided by Hortonworks, Cloudera, Amazon Web Services, and Azure.

As a textbook, this reference is quite suitable for introductory
Data Analytics courses, as it presents the "big picture" of this
emerging and rapidly evolving area of technology. The instructors'
website for the book does not yet include sample presentations nor
student exercises, but these are easily created from the base
material.

The authors clearly prefer Python and related tools over R for
analysis, and there is little mention of the latter in the book.
However, that too is easily augmented by instructors who wish to
include R in their courses for students with less programming
experience.

Don't Put God In A Box!!!

We have been involved with this ministry for over 6 years now.....we love to get these books into the hands of people considering/ or in the midst of divorce. We have a marriage that was healed 3 days before the divorce was final. Praise You, Heavenly Father! Highly recommend!!! Don't just be a hearer of the principles in this book...put it into action and wait upon the Lord.

This is a excellent book with loads of truth. Faith is the currency of Heaven the more you have of it the more you can get from God. Keeping the truth before your eyes will keep you on the road of restoration.

God used this book supported by scripture to open my eyes to my own sin. So often we are focused on the sin of our spouse that we neglect to look in the mirror. Each one of us are accountable to God regarding our role in the breakdown of a marriage. Pointing fingers never did much for Adam and Eve! By God's grae our marriage was restored .

Many of Higgins's thrillers have told one continuing saga, involving the efforts of Gen. Charles Ferguson (head of the British PM's "Private Army") and his staff to fend off various threats to queen and country. Here the timely challenge is Arab terrorism, but wobbly focus makes this a mediocre entry in a generally first-rate series. An attempt on the American president's life leads Ferguson—who alerted the Secret Service to the threat—and his main man, legendary hit man and former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, to Josef Belov, an associate of Vladimir Putin (who appears in a cameo) and a Russian oil billionaire who's intent on world domination and who along the way is funneling would-be jihadists from Britain into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. Instead of concentrating on the promising terrorist angle, Higgins traces Dillon and Ferguson's pursuit of Belov and his goons, a race that leads to violent shootouts in Iraq and elsewhere. Ferguson takes a bullet, and Supt. Hannah Bernstein is seriously hurt. The story climaxes in a vengeful, bloody foray by Dillon and old sidekick Billy Salter into Belov's castle stronghold in Ireland. Higgins's action has always been clipped, but here some scenes are positively rushed, and there's much that's overly familiar. Still, the author's high-speed narration and the mesmerizing hard edges of heroes and villains alike should sustain fans' perhaps grudging interest.

This one, which brings back IRA enforcer turned British intelligence officer Sean Dillon, begins with a botched attempt to assassinate the U.S. president. Turns out the would-be assassin (who takes his own life rather than be apprehended) is part of a network of villains bent on causing as much terror and confusion as possible. Can Dillon and his American counterpart Blake Johnson bring the evildoers to justice? It's a standard Higgins plot, with standard Higgins characters, and fans of the novelist's previous thrillers will soon realize they are in familiar territory. The Higgins name will still attract an audience of devotees, but younger readers new to the genre are unlikely to see what all the fuss was about. Even veteran Higgins readers may find that too much of a once good thing has become tedious. David Pitt

I like how Higgins books end

I read book 13 and a few others by this author before receiving my Kindle as a gift. Now I order the books in the series in order. I like how Higgins books end. They do not continue. He is very adapt in bringing the reader into knowing each characters' personalities without being boring. I love Sean Dillon, Ferguson and each protagonist he introduces. I will read every book!

I just discovered Jack Higgins "Sean Dillon" series and just cant seem to get enough of them. I have read probably l0 or ll of them now and have not been dissappointed in any of them

Fire the Ghostwriter!

All of these customer reviews are right on point. Let me say that I'm a huge Higgins fan, especially "Solo" and of course the Ferguson/Dillon volumes. I have all of his books displayed on my bookshelf back home, and whenever I'm home for the holidays i always take out Thunder Point and reread the first act - it's brilliant.

Which is why I'm so disappointed with Dark Justice! I read it in two days and have spent just as long trying to decide if the book even had a plot. Without giving anything away to those unfortunate enough waste their money on this book, there's a teaser on the jacket cover that doesn't materialize - and with the "climax" being so short and underdeveloped i'm pretty sure i didn't miss anything. the only person who "fell" was Mr. Higgins off my pedestal.

Shame on the esteemed author. He has a devoted legion of fans, myself included, and he's now mailing it in something terrible. I've seen cheesecakes with recipes that were more interesting - the First Act Dillon barfight, the revenge-motivating Second Act injury to a key character, and the Third Act convincing of Harry Salter that Billy can go on one more mission with Dillon - one can only hope that Higgins will run out of cliched castles in which to stage his "climaxes," but i'm starting to get the sense that we've seen it all before.

Needless to say, i returned the book to Borders - it has no place on my bookshelf! wildebeist@aol.com
