A great Read/Method for any Jazz Student or teacher!!
By matthew henry koon
This book covers "articulation" of a jazz musician, but is also a great overall text to understand jazz phrasing. There is a ton of content in this book!! The chapters are well organized, the text is informative, and it s one of those texts, that we as music students and teachers have been waiting for for a long time. The example tracks (original songs by Mr. Coffin) are tailored perfectly for each lesson, and are expertly played by Coffin, as well as Victor and Roy (futureman) Wooten. I am definitely already teaching these concepts to private studens, and plan onusing them with the local high school jazz band that I work with. Kudos on an Awesome Book!!

Not Saved: Essays After Heidegger, by Peter Sloterdijk

One can rightly say of Peter Sloterdijk that each of his essays and lectures is also an unwritten book. That is why the texts presented here, which sketch a philosophical physiognomy of Martin Heidegger, should also be characterized as a collected renunciation of exhaustiveness.

In order to situate Heidegger's thought in the history of ideas and problems, Peter Sloterdijk approaches Heidegger's work with questions such as: If Western philosophy emerged from the spirit of the polis, what are we to make of the philosophical suitability of a man who never made a secret of his stubborn attachment to rural life? Is there a provincial truth of which the cosmopolitan city knows nothing? Is there a truth in country roads and cabins that would be able to undermine the universities with their standardized languages and globally influential discourses? From where does this odd professor speak, when from his professorial chair in Freiburg he claims to inquire into what lies beyond the history of Western metaphysics?

Sloterdijk also considers several other crucial twentieth-century thinkers who provide some needed contrast for the philosophical physiognomy of Martin Heidegger. A consideration of Niklas Luhmann as a kind of contemporary version of the Devil's Advocate, a provocative critical interpretation of Theodor Adorno's philosophy that focuses on its theological underpinnings and which also includes reflections on the philosophical significance of hyperbole, and a short sketch of the pessimistic thought of Emil Cioran all round out and deepen Sloterdijk's attempts to think with, against, and beyond Heidegger. Finally, in essays such as "Domestication of Being" and the "Rules for the Human Park," which incited an international controversy around the time of its publication and has been translated afresh for this volume, Sloterdijk develops some of his most intriguing and important ideas on anthropogenesis, humanism, technology, and genetic engineering.

Review
"This book is essential for anyone interested in one of the contemporary world's most prescient, prolific, and prominent philosophers."
Phenomenological Reviews

“With his usual flair, philosophical finesse, and dazzling scholarship, Peter Sloterdijk shows us what it means to read Heidegger today, beyond accusation and apology. At a time when so many have decided to turn away from his thought, Sloterdijk teaches us a lesson in how to think with, but also after and beyond Heidegger. Not Saved is an impressive collection of essays, which touches expertly and delicately on a wide range of contemporary issues, such as globalization, technology, and the post-human condition. It will be discussed for many years to come.”
Miguel de Beistegui, Warwick University

About the Author
Peter Sloterdijk is Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Karlsruhe School of Design.

this book is not just an introduction to Heidegger but also a introduction to some of the questions asked in philosophy today
By Patrick Regan
This is an interesting book. After reading some of the articles, I feel that I have gotten a sense of what is going on in the world of contemporary philosophy. While this book is ostensibly about the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk's take on the ideas of Heidegger, in taking on Heidegger's ideas, Sloterdijk brings up a lot of the issues of contemporary philosophy. One particular article called "The Human Park" brings up the question of how the ideals of humanism can be transferred to a population that reads less and less. This question is not fully answered by either Heidegger or Sloterdijk but it is the question itself that is interesting as this question brings up the question of whether there need be a common intellectual ground and moreover, if there is to be one, how can it be reestablished in a world of video games and television and other mediums perhaps not as well suited as books for transferal of ideas. I found that these articles take a long time to read as they are full of ideas and you will want to think about each one. While I feel I have gotten a better sense of what Heidegger thought, it the invitation to think about ideas like the one above that make this book interesting to read.

Not a Savior ...
By Mike
A thought provoking series of essays and talks about the state of philosophy and human society/humanity. This covers some of the same ideas found in Civilization and Its Discontents. One can look at the current state of the world politic as the narcissism of small differences globalized by social media platforms.

How do we come to terms with the reality of atheism and that we create out own purpose or become the actors for someone else's? If we realize the the forces of natural selection and the market do not promote the best, but the most fecund and resilient, we may be able to get ourselves out of these violent cycles.

The writing is not as accessible as it could be for a general reader, but is thought provoking.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead―and keep it together―in New York City.

It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing “important” work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club. Her roommates―her best friend Jane, and Dan, an aspiring sci-fi writer―are supportive, yet Franny knows a two-person fan club doesn’t exactly count as success. Everyone tells her she needs a backup plan, and though she can almost picture moving back home and settling down with her perfectly nice ex-boyfriend, she’s not ready to give up on her goal of having a career like her idols Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Not just yet. But while she dreams of filling their shoes, in the meantime, she’d happily settle for a speaking part in almost anything—and finding a hair product combination that works.

Everything is riding on the upcoming showcase for her acting class, where she’ll finally have a chance to perform for people who could actually hire her. And she can’t let herself be distracted by James Franklin, a notorious flirt and the most successful actor in her class, even though he’s suddenly started paying attention. Meanwhile, her bank account is rapidly dwindling, her father wants her to come home, and her agent doesn’t return her calls. But for some reason, she keeps believing that she just might get what she came for.

Someday, Someday, Maybe is a story about hopes and dreams, being young in a city, and wanting something deeply, madly, desperately. It’s about finding love, finding yourself, and perhaps most difficult of all in New York City, finding an acting job.

From Booklist
Actor Graham (Gilmore Girls, Parenthood) turns to a new creative outlet with her breezy first novel set in the demoralizing if funny bustle of New York City’s 1995 acting world. Twentysomething Franny Banks is destined to act, if she can can actually land a decent audition and an even more decent part. Able to pay her rent since she snagged a coveted comedy-club waitressing job, Franny lives the typical life of a struggling actor as she tries to balance finding a good agent, going to auditions, making a splash in her acting class, and keeping her disliked if much-needed job while fretting over the looming self-imposed deadline of three years to make it on Broadway. Her roommates, good pal Jane and wannabe writer Dan, play her foils as she also deals with family issues and the very enticing James Franklin, from her acting class. A jaunty style and cutesy Filofax entries mark this as light yet enjoyable reading. Recommended for readers interested in a blithe, behind-the-scenes take on aspiring actors and their world. --Julie Trevelyan

A Novel Full of Lauren Graham Humor
By Kindle Customer
I'm a Gilmore fan. I bawled when the the finale aired. BAWLED. So when I saw a debut novel by THE Lauren Graham, I knew that I had to read it. I honestly had to expectations other than I knew it would be funny edging towards snarky. And my dear readers, it was that indeed.

I'm not going to re-summarize the story. The summary above does a decent job of that. I'm going to give you the low-down on the book though. Lauren Graham depicts a great deal of her personality into this story. There was a reason that people loved Gilmore Girls, and a big chunk of that reason was the quirky personality Lauren Graham played. There was so much of that kind of personality in the book complete with the long-winded and super humorous rants. The book is full of light humor, and the struggles of a woman trying to make it in the world of theater as an actress. The story may be predictable, but the refreshing perspective full of humor and clever wit was a huge selling point for me.

Since I am not normally one to really get into chick-lit, liking this book was a pretty big deal. Franny, the main character, is incredibly self-depracting in a way that I actually admired and related to. She wants success, but she struggles with getting it on her own terms with her dignity in tact. She ends up in a relationship with a guy that is just all wrong. But there is an incredibly sweet guy waiting that just adores her. Dan is probably one of the sweetest and awkward characters I've met in awhile.

The book may be chick-lit, but the story is well-thought out and relatable. I appreciated the story I was being told, and enjoyed spending some time reading the words of Lauren Graham. Also, the character is named after Franny from J.D. Salinger's short story. I love it when authors include that story into their own.

Low Points: It was pretty predictable. I had to spend more time with James, a love interest, than I would have liked. There was a bit of flip flopping on Franny's part that drove me a lot crazy at times.
High Points: Well of course the humor. There were a lot of scenes that if I just pictured Ms. Graham doing them, they became even funnier in my mind. I loved the 90's references and reading the different messages left on her answering machine. *I honestly miss the old-fashioned answering machines.* Also ever so once in a while, Franny's Filofax pages are shown, and it was fun to read the different things written on them.

Who Should Read It: Did/do you love Gilmore Girls? If you enjoyed the humor of the show, you will probably enjoy the book. Lovers of chick-lit and light fiction may enjoy it as well.

Lauren Graham: As funny on the page as she is on the stage
By Susan Tunis
Life is often heavy. Literature is often heavy. Sometimes I just want a little light entertainment, and Lauren Graham's debut novel, Someday, Someday Maybe sounded like just what the doctor ordered. Now there's no reason to believe that a gifted comic actress would be a particularly gifted comic novelist. Actually, my expectations might lean slightly in the opposite direction. So let me be the first to proclaim what a fun, funny, clever, and refreshing debut this is. It was absolutely everything I wanted and more than I expected.

Someday, Someday Maybe is the story of aspiring actress Franny Banks. She'd given herself three years to make it in New York, and as the novel opens in 1995, her deadline is fast approaching. Currently, she's waiting tables, not for Godot. The novel details Franny's travails personally and professionally as her deadline looms. There's no real need to describe the plot further.

It seems reasonable to assume that there's at least a smidge of autobiography in the mix. It can't be a coincidence that Lauren Graham's first professional listings on IMDB showed up right around 1995. She's writing about a time, a place, and a world that she knows. The details ring true. And she does an excellent job of articulating the work of an actor. It's quite interesting being inside Franny's head, hearing her thought process, as she taps into the emotions she needs to convey. It's easy to empathize with the likeable Franny and to root for her to succeed.

One of the greatest pleasures of the novel is the humor. Both actors and the industry are satirized. Additionally, there is rich observational humor. In discussing a neighbor, Graham writes: "We worry about Frank in the way New Yorkers worry about strangers whose apartments they can see into. Which is to say, we made up a name for him and have theories about his life, and we'd call 911 if we saw something frightening happen while spying on him, but if I ran into him on the subway, I'd look the other way."

Aside from her career, Franny is a twenty-something woman navigating the rocky shoals of romance. There's a light chick-lit feel to the novel, and the romantic subplot was truly delightful. Graham has meta-fictional fun with romance tropes: "I mean, the whole `love triangle' THING bothers me. Who even thought of that? I've never been in a love triangle. Especially one where the girl is torn between the obviously right guy played by the more famous actor and the obviously hideously wrong guy played by the slightly less famous actor. And also, why does the heroine always have a sassy best friend? And why is she always a brunette?"

This is not literary fiction. Graham is writing in the voice of her first-person narrator. Yes, there are a fair number of run on sentences and sentence fragments, but she brings Franny's voice to life. I could hear her, and she didn't actually sound very much like Lorelei Gilmore at all. Franny is a new creation. The novel's prose is very readable, and occasionally it's more than that. Also, Franny's tale moves swiftly. It's a story you'll read in no time, and the odds are good you'll be left wishing for a few chapters more.

Graham's characters are appealing. You want these young people to find their happy ending--whatever that happens to be. The novel comes to a very satisfying conclusion, and I enjoyed my time in Franny's company enough that I wouldn't mind at all visiting with her in the future. Given her creator's success, I'm going to gamble that things turn out alright for her. As for Lauren Graham, I can only hope those long hours on set translate to further forays into fiction. This was an auspicious and entertaining debut. I'm waiting for a sequel.

Someday, someday maybe, the author will write a conclusion to the story...
By Michelle Rayburn
I wanted to love this book because I love Lauren Graham as an actress. She's quick-witted and quippy in almost every role, and it's obvious this is part of her own persona that she brings to each character she plays. I knew a book written by her would bring the witty sarcasm I find funny. And she did. She brought it. I can't help but think that much of this is autobiographical. It's set in 1995, back in the days, I presume, when Graham was getting started as an actress. I wondered as I read it if she changed a memoir to fiction to protect the innocent. Who knows.

Main character Franny Banks has a self-imposed deadline to make it as an actress. She's in an acting class, ready to complete her final showcase, and her hopes are on getting booked somewhere by an agent as a result. This book is her journey through the six months leading up to her deadline. I won't give away any more of the story. The back cover copy says enough to tease the reader. But I will go into the details of why I gave this 3 stars and not the 5 I hoped I could give it.

First what I liked. Graham is a funny writer and her quirky sarcasm is here. I liked getting inside Franny's head and reading all of the tangents her thoughts take on an everyday basis. I liked the dialogue and character development. There are several actors in Franny's class that have interesting characteristics, and Franny's roommates are interesting. From the viewpoint of style, I loved this book. I appreciated that the swear words and sex were kept to a tasteful level, similar to shows such as Gilmore Girls and Parenthood where Graham appears. There are a couple of uses of the "f" word, for those who want to know that in advance. I loved the creative design of the book with the Filofax [I had to look that up. It's a glorified day planner.] pages inserted between chapters. Reading the calendar pages which are like Franny's diary, adds a layer to the character.

What I didn't like. First, it's just sort of boring. It's like reading a diary where nothing much really happens. It's funny, but even the most tense moments really aren't all that engaging. Maybe it's predictable, maybe it's just lacking the mechanics of good fiction. It's like a beautiful sculpture with no bone structure beneath to hold it together. The story just coasts to the end. And just when I turn the page thinking there's more, it's just over. It leaves the reader hanging, sort of. I say sort of, because there would have to be some sort of huge cliffhanger to say it really left the reader suspended. Instead, the story just ends. As if there were other chapters that got left out of the advance reader copy Amazon sent me.

I tossed it on the coffee table when I finished [after I flipped through the back looking for the "missing" pages] and said to my husband, "What a waste of my precious free time!" Nothing about the story moved me in any way that I could take something away from it. Just emptiness. In the end, I can't help but wonder if the author feels a sense of emptiness even with the wild success of her career? Maybe it's sadness I feel for her, or for her disguised as Franny. Whatever it is, I'm giving this three stars only because Graham has potential as a writer. She puts words together well, and I see how with a little development as a writer, I could love her work. She just needs to develop her story, the tension, the connection with the reader better. I'm guessing it reached the New York Times Bestseller list because of the acclaim of the author herself, not because of the story. Someday, someday maybe, Graham will write a REAL bestseller!

Would I recommend this book to a friend? I wish I could say otherwise, but, no.

Wealth and Welfare States: Is America a Laggard or Leader?, by Irwin Garfinkel, Lee Rainwater, Timothy Smeeding

This book explores the role of the welfare state in the overall wealth and wellbeing of nations and in particular looks at the American welfare state in comparison with other developed nations in Europe and elsewhere.

It is widely believed that the welfare state undermines productivity and economic growth, that the United States has an unusually small welfare state, and that it is, and always has been, a welfare state laggard. This book shows that all rich nations, including the United States, have large welfare states because the socialized programs that comprise the welfare state-public education and health and social insurance--enhance the productivity of capitalism. In public education, the most productive part of the welfare state, for most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the United States was a leader.

Though few would argue that public education is not part of the welfare state, most previous cross national analyses of welfare states have omitted education. Including education has profound consequences, undergirding the case for the productivity of welfare state programs and the explanation for why all rich nations have large welfare states, and identifying US welfare state leadership. From 1968 through 2006, the United States swung right politically and lost its lead in education and opportunity, failed to adopt universal health insurance and experienced the most rapid explosion of health care costs and economic inequality in the rich world.

The American welfare state faces large challenges. Restoring its historical lead in education is the most important but requires investing large sums in education, beginning with universal pre-school and in complementary programs that aid children's development. The American health insurance system is by far the most costly in the rich world, yet fails to insure one sixth of its population, produces below average results, crowds out useful investments in children, and is the least equitably financed. Achieving universal coverage will increase costs. Only complete government financing is likely to restrain long term costs.

Review

"Significant...impressive...[an] important and timely new book... Garfinkel, Rainwater, and Smeeding provide a new and fascinating look at the U.S. welfare state in comparative perspective." --Social Service Review

"...Wealth and welfare states challenges longstanding views of the welfare state as a hindrance to capitalism, and of the US welfare state as a particularly anemic example... This work is innovative in the existing comparative welfare state literature through its discussion of public education, as both key to the welfare state's success and an area in which the US is a historic leader." --Journal of Childern and Poverty

This book is kind of like taking every possible variation of welfare in America and comparing it to every possible variation of welfare in other countries and by the end of the book you're just like why??? But I had to read it for a class and it was very informative but kind of dry and a little confusing at times. I wouldn't have read this book if I didn't have to but it could have been worse.

The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living (Compass), by Joseph M. Marshall III

Joseph M. Marshall’s thoughtful, illuminating account of how the spiritual beliefs of the Lakota people can help us all lead more meaningful, ethical lives.

Rich with storytelling, history, and folklore, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and reveals the path to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Joseph Marshall is a member of the Sicunga Lakota Sioux and has dedicated his entire life to the wisdom he learned from his elders. Here he focuses on the twelve core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of life--bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion. Whether teaching a lesson on respect imparted by the mythical Deer Woman or the humility embodied by the legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse, The Lakota Way offers a fresh outlook on spirituality and ethical living.

Amazon.com Review
To the Lakota Indians, virtues such as humility, sacrifice, and bravery are not just distant goals to aspire toward, they are daily expectations. "We believe we are measured by how well, or how little, we manifest virtue in our life's journey," writes Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota. This collection of stories illustrates how generations are taught the Lakota Way of virtuous living through oral storytelling. Marshall recounts the tale of Deer Woman--a siren that lures hunters to her teepee then steals their souls. As the story goes, a grandmother warns her grandson not to be trapped by this beautiful soul-snatcher. When the grandson finally encounters Deer Woman, he is able to resist her seduction, not because he is afraid she'll steal his soul, but because he would never disobey his grandmother. For the Lakota, respect for elders is one of the most honored virtues. After each story, Marshall offers a gracefully rendered essay on the virtue it espouses and how it's applied to daily life. We are fortunate that Marshall translated these precious stories into written English. "They are our gift to the world," he explains. "They are not guarded secrets, they are markers on the road to life--the answers soaring across the open prairies of our lives on the winds of wisdom--helping us, perhaps helping you." --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Humility, perseverance, bravery, sacrifice and love are among the 12 values of the Lakota tribe that are presented through traditional stories and personal commentary in Joseph M. Marshall III's The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living. The legend of White Lance and Red Willow Woman teaches the importance of love and duty, for instance, while Marshall's account of his father's battle with cancer stresses the merits of bravery. The lessons for life, which stress the proverbial attributes of common sense and moral vigor, may not be surprising, but the stories that frame them will be new and forceful to most.

From Library Journal
Marshall was raised by his maternal grandparents on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he learned Lakota as his first language. Now a historian, actor (Return to Lonesome Dove), and author (Dance House), Marshall beautifully imparts Lakota wisdom here. He certainly knows how to weave a story. In each of the 12 chapters, he introduces an important Lakota virtue (e.g., unsiiciyapi, or humility; and wowacintanka, or perseverance), illustrating it with personal stories and archetypal Lakota tales. The afterword succinctly describes a brief history of the Sioux people. An inspiring study guide for a wide audience, Marshall's book belongs on the same shelf as Severt Young Bear's Standing in the Light (Univ. of Nebraska, 1994) and Billy Mills's Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness (Hay House, 2001). Profoundly and beautifully simple, NOT simplistic.
By RowingMyBoat
Reviewing material that deals with life lessons and spiritual matters is tricky - often mere words are inadequate - even more often someone is bound to be seriously offended. That being said, this is not my first purchase of "The Lakota Way". I had given my copy away - not the first time this happened. My first encounter with this material was shortly after initial publication, via the audio CD as my husband and I wandered the mountains, deserts and canyon lands of the southwest. The author's voice, re-telling the stories he first heard as a young boy may, in fact, be the best way to begin. We replayed the CD's several times as we encountered some of the most spectacular vista's on the planet. It was a deeply moving spiritual experience for both of us - and as events transpired, the last such trip we would take together before his death.

In retrospect, aside from the author's amazing voice, what struck me initially was the reference to God as the "Great Mystery". From my perspective, a "perfect" name for God - both beautiful and respectful. God is who God is and God does what God does and while two-leggeds might choose to waste time on definitions and categories and attempting to enshrine God in a place, a book, a box or a dogma such attempts seem to somehow diminish God. "Great Mystery" is dynamic, precluding definition. Buckminster Fuller reportedly said, "God is a verb." In that sense, "Great Mystery" is both a verb and a noun.

What then, is to be learned from "The Lakota Way"? In the Christian tradition, we are directed to love one another as ourselves. The Lakota people believed, and continue to believe, that there are certain virtues to be practiced that enable us to be in right relationship with each other and all of creation. Each of these virtues is beautifully illustrated with stories, which may be seen as analogous (with apologies to the author) to the parables of the New Testament. Humans love to push the envelope - pushing the envelope of virtue, leads us in the direction of ever more virtuous behavior and better relationships. The logical outcome of pushing "thou shalt nots" is what we can "get away with", and ever more rules to "clarify" acceptable behavior. We seem to have arrived at a time and place in human history where the rules have become more important than the relationships, with each other as collateral damage. It seems clear that the Lakota - prior to their encounters with those from the "Old World" - had developed a way of being that came closer to creating a society that worked for everybody than those governed by the precepts of the "Three Great Religions". I guess what I find most surprising is that the emergent new growth industry of "spiritual pathfinding" is largely focused on the "old world" for answers.

Cherished Works
By D.S. Marshall
I enjoy all of Mr. Marshall's works. While I don't have his complete library, I am almost there. No, he is not related to me, though we share the same last name. His works give a tremendous insight into traditional Lakota culture. I would dearly love to meet him should our paths have a chance to cross. I was born just after most of the Elders who lived the Lakota wars (as teenagers or younger)crossed over, Black Elk for example. Mr. Marshall, to me, would be the closest to the last "free" Lakota. His works are to be cherished. Once I begin reading one of his books, I can not put it down.

A book for grandparents and teachers
By Angeles Valero
I came across this book at a teachers conference this summer (thank you, Valerie Knauer), and I immediately thought I wanted my students to experience and reflect on the experience of reading this book, even though I live in Spain, a country that can only relate to Native Americans' history through old B&W westerns.

Probably, that was the main reason why I was so amazed by this book, because it gives you all the wisdom you'd expect from an old person's speech, and no matter where you're from or where you live, the stories will appeal to you, and you will be looking forward to sharing them with your young ones. I think they are the stories we should all have been told when we were little.

These stories can help young people grow to be fine adults.

Still as Subversive and Silly
By Talvi
After 8 volumes, mangaka Tanaka has set a clear pattern: the girls plot to get Sato, Sato harasses Yoshida, and very little happens to further the plot. And yet, really, this turns so many shoujo/shounen ai conventions on their heads that it is always worth it. Certainly, with this volume we get very little pay off on the relationship but it's still all about the humor and antics. And yes, I think we all love Yoshida just as much as Sato clearly does.

Story: Two events change up Yoshida and Sato's situation: Christmas and a school trip. It looks like Sato may have to go away with family over the holidays - leaving him bereft of Yoshida's company at that most important time of the year. Later, a school trip to Nara and Kyoto would mean Sato's first adventure of that type (he's a school trip virgin!) and he's eager for time alone with Yoshida. But then again, every girl in the school (and a bunch of girls from other schools!) are looking to catch Sato's attention on the trip as well. Can Yoshida survive all the plotting and scheming?

So yes, His Favorite 8 is just as subversive and silly as previous volumes. But it is a quick read and always elicits a warm laugh at Yoshida's predicament. I look forward to volume 9! Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Fantastic Read
By Tristan A. Hayes
Another fantastic entry in the His Favorite series. I can't wait for v9 to see what other silly situations awkward Yoshida is thrown in.

This volume follows the same pattern established, awkward Yoshida is treated to loving Sato and he still battles his feelings with whether or not there are feelings of love. Fortunately it seems he isn't truly against it which causes him to have specific considerations for how to spend Christmas and beyond. I enjoyed it immensely. The next chapter featured a very cute Sato with a school trip type of situation and one that was too cute for words. It was amazing.

The volume was yet another quality product from viz/suBLime with no typoes, torn pages or anything. There was a color insert as well as a translated postscript.

I love it!!
By moonlight
After the shocking truth from volume 7, the secret is finally out in volume 8 of His Favorite! So many cute scenes between yoshida and sato as they become more open in their relationship.
Christmas and New year's are around the corner, and it's never a dull moment.
Azuma tries to win Nishida's trust back with help of Sota's advice that might actually work?
Sota is excited for his first school field trip with Yoshida. The girls decide to take it easy and let sota enjoy his first field trip. Meanwhile, sota shows so many blushing and cute sides that yoshida can't take the cuteness. Sightseeing and pillow fights, what could be better than that? Except for when night comes, everyone's alseep, and yoshida and sato sleep right next to each other. Wounder what they'll do next.

Definitely one of my favorite volumes of His Favorite! I got so excited writing a review about this volume. It was fun.

The New York Times best selling true story of an unlikely friendship forged between a woman and the man she incorrectly identified as her rapist and sent to prison for 11 years.

Jennifer Thompson was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment while she slept. She was able to escape, and eventually positively identified Ronald Cotton as her attacker. Ronald insisted that she was mistaken-- but Jennifer's positive identification was the compelling evidence that put him behind bars.

After eleven years, Ronald was allowed to take a DNA test that proved his innocence. He was released, after serving more than a decade in prison for a crime he never committed. Two years later, Jennifer and Ronald met face to face-- and forged an unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives.

With Picking Cotton, Jennifer and Ronald tell in their own words the harrowing details of their tragedy, and challenge our ideas of memory and judgment while demonstrating the profound nature of human grace and the healing power of forgiveness.

About the Author

JENNIFER THOMPSON-CANNINO lives in North Carolina with her family. RONALD COTTON also lives with his wife and daughter North Carolina. ERIN TORNEO is a Los Angeles-based writer. She was a 2007 New York Foundation for the Arts Nonfiction Fellow. The authors received the 2008 Soros Justice Media Fellowship for this title.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Kate Tuttle Nearly everyone in prison protests their innocence, but Ronald Cotton was telling the truth. Cotton was just 22 when he walked into a Burlington, N.C., police station to answer rape allegations; he spent the next 11 years seeking freedom. "Put a man in a cage with beasts and throw away the key, and it's usually not long before the man is a beast himself," he writes in this unusual joint memoir, written with his accuser and now friend, Jennifer Thompson-Cannino. Considering the odds stacked against him -- a bum alibi, a victim focused on being the strongest possible witness, a justice system all too willing to send another young black man to jail -- it's extraordinary that Cotton emerged from prison at all. More stunning still was his willingness, upon exoneration by DNA evidence, to forgive the people who had put him there, including rape victim Thompson-Cannino, whose erroneous identification of Cotton in a police line-up had begun his horrible odyssey. Their story, told here in alternating sections, emphasizes that both were victims. Still, as both acknowledge, Thompson-Cannino, traumatized as she was, spent the next decade in freedom, marrying and having kids, while Cotton endured prison. Left mostly unexamined is the role that race played in his incarceration, but even the most cynical reader will be impressed by Cotton's resilience and grace.

In 1984 a college student woke up in her Burlington, North Carolina, apartment to find a young black man in her bed who intended to rape her. Because Jennifer Thompson was about half the size of the man she faced, and was already pinned down by his weight by the time she awoke, she recognized that any physical defense she presented would only worsen her situation. Jennifer, however, was not prepared to give up that easily. As the man began raping her she made a conscious effort to study his face and everything about him so that she would be able to work as closely as possible with the police on his capture. She even talked him into interrupting the rape long enough for her to escape the apartment and run for help.

Jennifer's attention to detail resulted in the well-executed police artist sketch that would lead to the quick arrest of Ronald Cotton, a local man, as the man who raped her and another woman on the same night.

Cotton was not at all worried when his family told him the Burlington Police Department wanted to speak with him in connection with the two rapes. He knew he had a rock-solid alibi for the night in question, so he drove himself to the police station in order to prove that he had nothing to do with either crime. Unfortunately for Cotton, he got his dates mixed up, making his supposed alibi worthless, and he was charged with both rapes.

The trial jury recognized Cotton's resemblance to the police sketch and considered Thompson to be an exceptional witness because of her decision to concentrate on her assailant even as the assault against her was happening. Her strong trial testimony, during which she appeared to be absolutely certain of Cotton's guilt, was all the jury needed to convict Cotton of her rape, and they quickly did just that.

Eleven years later, in 1995, DNA testing would prove that Ronald Cotton had nothing to do with Jennifer Thompson's rape and he was freed from prison, a dream that Cotton had all but given up on ever seeing happen. Ronald Cotton, now in his early thirties and lucky to have survived more than a decade in prison, was back with his family hoping to start a new life for himself.

Tragic as all of this is, it is far from being a unique story because, sadly, this kind of thing happens more than anyone in law enforcement would care to admit. Thousands of people have been imprisoned with no more evidence against them than the word of their accuser. Honest mistakes are made, lies are purposely told, and justice is not always blind.

No, the truly remarkable part of this story is what happened next.

Jennifer Thompson, married and the mother of triplets by the time of Cotton's release, feared that he would take his revenge by harming her or her children. Two years passed before the two of them finally came face-to-face but, when it did happen, both their lives were changed forever. Cotton, an extremely compassionate man, surprised Thompson by readily offering his forgiveness in their first conversation - and that would be the beginning of a powerful, loving friendship between the two and their families that is still going strong.

Today Cotton and Thompson work together to bring attention to other inmates around the country who have been imprisoned under circumstances similar to those that placed Ronald Cotton in jeopardy of spending his whole life in a jail cell. Much good has come from the awful circumstances that have linked forever the lives of these two people, and Thompson and Cotton have both thanked God that Cotton is the one she chose that day in the Burlington police station if she was destined to get it wrong.

I'll Never Forget That Face
By Smoten
Crime victims often say that about their assailant and often they are wrong. Single witness identification cases are the bane of the criminal justice system and every year more and more innocent men are freed from prison by irrefutable scientific evidence that may not have been available at the time of their convictions. Well and good, but since the overwhelming majority of cases do not involve DNA, do not involve trace evidence of any kind, there is no way of knowing how many innocent people still languish in prison, put there on the strength of a single eyewitness, an honest person trying to get it right who nonetheless got it wrong with tragic consequences.

Ronald Cotton did not rape Jennifer Thompson. She was sure he did-she would never forget that face-and two separate juries found her identification so compelling that Mr.Cotton was twice convicted and sentenced to life. He was exonerated by DNA after eleven long years in prison. "Picking Cotton", co-authored by both victims, is more than just another tale of a misfiring justice system. It is also a powerful story of grace and forgiveness. Not only has Mr. Cotton forgiven Ms. Thompson for her mistaken identification of him, but he has become her friend. He truly is a remarkable man. Ms. Thompson is also quite remarkable. She travels the country with Mr. Cotton, telling their story, and warning of the dangers of identification testimony. She has championed changes in identification procedures used by police to make them more fair and has seen such changes enacted in her home state of North Carolina, the scene of the crime. "Picking Cotton" is a cautionary tale that should be required reading in every police academy and law school in the country.

In the eye of the beholder...

Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton is the well told story of the two authors. Jennifer was a college student in 1984 when a knife-wielding man broke into her apartment and raped her. She works to remember her assailant so she can identify him. She identifies Ronald Cotton. Due to appeals, Jennifer is staunch in her identification of Cotton through a second trial after which Cotton is sentenced to Life Imprisonment plus 54 years. Because of the OJ Simpson murder trial, Cotton learns of a new test that may prove the innocence he has professed from the night he turned himself into the police "to straighten out this situation." The new test is DNA. After 11 years in prison, Cotton is exonerated through a combination of the DNA test results and the confession of the rapist. The story could have ended there, but does not. Cotton proves to be a true Christian in forgiving the woman he could have hated for the rest of her life. As profound as Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking. Two admirable people making the world more just.

Through the account, we understand Jennifer's anquish and sense of violation. From the beginning, Ron seems a remarkable person never bitter about his circumstances, but still missing parts of life many would take for granted such as birthdays, anniversaries, funerals.

A documentary for PBS is made about Cotton's case. At the end, he questions that Jennifer has never contacted him. When she does (after watching the documentary) she is surprised by his acceptance of her. Eventually, the two work together on other cases of injustice throughout the United States.

The book presents serious questions about the criminal justice system - especially the validity of eyewitnesses. No easy answers. Just two people now working together to change the world one case at a time.

On par with Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking.
