Exceptional

In Rose's Story Wanda Bibb describes her life in painful detail and explains how her life was affected by her environment as well as her personal characteristics. She talks about everything from foster care and welfare, to her abuse as a child and an adult, as well as the birth of her children and her fight to keep them. The book illustrates how once a person has a mental diagnosis professionals they come in contact with tend to assume that any problems that person has is related to that diagnosis whether that be the case or not.

It is impressive that during this book Ms. Bibb retains a positive attitude when ever she can and never seems to show ill will to those who have wronged her unless completely necessary where as many people in the same situation would be unable to do the same.

Roses Story

Roses story was a motivational story about how a young mother with many health problems and a far from supportive family struggled with not only life but the welfare system. It is very detailed with the many accounts of hardship and triumphs she experienced along the way. She had many people do her wrong but through it all she never gave up on her children. It is a great book to read for anyone going into social work. It gives you a glimpse into what the welfare system was like many years ago and even though its not perfect now it lets you see how far it has come.

Rose's story was a very moving book. It took us into the world of a mother that had been diagnosed with a mental illness. The challenges she faced were from the illness as well as people misunderstanding her situation. It was sad that even the social worker failed to help guide her into a better living condition. This book is great to help educate people on the importance of social workers in our society. After reading this I gained more sympathy for people who face a mental illness, and with the correct assistance they can overcome their unstable behavior.

About the Author
Lindsay Fischer is a trauma-tested author who writes about her own experiences to help others feel less alone. A former English teacher and dance coach, a domestic violence survivor, and - now - a seemingly infertile Myrtle, she refuses to be silent about the things that change our lives. For her, those issues are domestic violence and infertility. Lindsay Fischer graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education, English. Life got messy when she fell in love with a man who would become her abuser, and it pulled her from the classroom. After three years of trauma therapy, she saw an opportunity to use her voice against injustices and shame-filled adversity, blogging under the pseudonym Sarafina Bianco since 2009. She revealed her real identity in 2015 when her memoir, The House on Sunset, was re-released. She currently lives with her husband and three dogs in St. Louis, Missouri.

For more than it says it is

This book was a bit of a surprise. I went in knowing full well that I may just be out of my jurisdiction on this book. Obviously I’m not the intended audience…and yet… Starting this book out, I was just a little bit in over my head. Just a tad, I live with my mom and sis, and though I give them crap for too much info, it doesn’t bother me. Same with this book. It didn’t bother me, and it was rather interesting to read. Mostly because she’s not afraid to actually speak. By that I mean, there’s the sass, there’s the little bit of humor, and light heartedness that comes out when speaking about a tough topic. She keeps the words floating in good rhythm, sort of lightly bouncing along, trying to help get things to the point quick and clear as possible, while maintaining that lighthearted tone. After that, I had let the author know that I may be a bit rough on the edges with the feedback/review. Then she told me something different, something that shifted my perspective a bit. “I think the theory can still apply to anyone dealing with trauma of some kind.” You see I was so caught up in what this was for, I didn’t really think to see it otherwise. And so I read on. Now let me just say, I hold myself tight to my chest. I don’t open up, I don’t do none of that. My politics, religions, my past, my experiences, etc. are all my own. Very few people know about me, even my parents are in the dark. This being said, I’ve done, said, seen, some stuff I can consider pretty damn negative things. Just read the s*** I write, it ain’t hard to believe. So I can safely say, things were opening up a bit as I read this.

I’m reading this, and I’m actually taking notes. Some of it I’ve actually done (cleaned up my desk, my little garage corner, unfollowed Facebook friends etc.). Other stuff, I’m very willing to do. I’m just thinking, where the hell was this book a few years ago. Or last month. Or…anywho back to the review. She’s giving advice, followed by challenges, followed by notes. All of this is a sort of step by step process, BUT at the same time, she’s giving notes as to help allow yourself to customize it to your needs and your wants. Even with the mentions of the fertility (which is the topic at hand, don’t forget), these things aren’t too bothered down constricting limitations. Now for the subject of this book. While this book focuses mostly on the female side of it, it’s something that I think that should be read by both. The author doesn’t seclude the idea that the guy may be reading this. I mean, s*** the guy ought to know what’s going on and have an understanding of why this is being done and when. Hell it might even be best that the couples do this together. It just seems like the kind of thing that the man and woman would read, experience, and help out with. This was a very interesting read, an eye opener, a self-opener, a kind of perspective shift, and just all around not what I was expecting. What as I expecting? Not a freaking clue, but it wasn’t this lol.

since if you're like me, you spend a chunk of your TWW ...

If you've experienced the torture of the TWW, you *need* this book. After a MMC earlier this year, we're back to TTC, which means experiencing those two weeks of hoping, wishing, planning, doubting, second guessing, and generally driving ourselves crazy. Lindsay is here to save the day, offering a series of tasks and challenges to help me focus on something, ANYTHING other than the what-ifs. (Plus a handy guide to the online fertility boards' acronyms, since if you're like me, you spend a chunk of your TWW obsessively googling.)

Her book is witty, funny, caring, and exactly what I needed. Highly recommend!

Read this, even if you're not trying to get pregnant!

As a survivor myself of domestic violence, I can attest that what this author wrote about is absolutely true. Suffering from severe endometriosis, gastrointestinal problems, allergies and other ailments, it can definitely affect a woman's ability to conceive. The Two Week Wait is such an accurate telling of the agony of the what-ifs and can really help ANYONE with learning how to slow oneself down and stay in he moment. Even if you're not trying to get pregnant, I strongly recommend this book. I read it myself, ten years after having my first and only child; did the exercises; and know how to now be mindful when I start projecting into the unknowns of the future. Great read!

I received the Audible version of this book this morning. Chip and Joanna are the narrators and it is positively delightful hearing this book "in their own words"! Learning about their early life and the way that they have dealt with their problems and how they have lived their lives has been uplifting. I didn't want to read this book...

I'm a huge fan of Fixer Upper. I love how real Chip and Joanna are, and the homes they create always leave me feeling so inspired... And a bit jealous. I initially didn't want to read this book because I thought it might leave me dissatisfied with my current life situation, and longing for the life of Chip and Joanna Gaines. But I did read it, and it did the complete opposite! I haven't felt this inspired, satisfied, or encouraged in a long time. If you're looking for a "how to" book on design and building, this isn't it. It does, however, offer so much more - you won't regret reading it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

The young Robert Louis Stevenson suffered from repeated nightmares of living a double life, in which by day he worked as a respectable doctor and by night he roamed the back alleys of old-town Edinburgh. In three days of furious writing, he produced a story about his dream existence. His wife found it too gruesome, so he promptly burned the manuscript. In another three days, he wrote it again. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was published as a "shilling shocker" in 1886, and became an instant classic. In the first six months, 40,000 copies were sold. Queen Victoria read it. Sermons and editorials were written about it. When Stevenson and his family visited America a year later, they were mobbed by reporters at the dock in New York City. Compulsively readable from its opening pages, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is still one of the best tales ever written about the divided self.

This University of Nebraska Press edition is a small, exquisitely produced paperback. The book design, based on the original first edition of 1886, includes wide margins, decorative capitals on the title page and first page of each chapter, and a clean, readable font that is 19th-century in style. Joyce Carol Oates contributes a foreword in which she calls Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a "mythopoetic figure" like Frankenstein, Dracula, and Alice in Wonderland, and compares Stevenson's creation to doubled selves in the works of Plato, Poe, Wilde, and Dickens.

This edition also features 12 full-page wood engravings by renowned illustrator Barry Moser. Moser is a skillful reader and interpreter as well as artist, and his afterword to the book, in which he explains the process by which he chose a self-portrait motif for the suite of engravings, is fascinating. For the image of Edward Hyde, he writes, "I went so far as to have my dentist fit me out with a carefully sculpted prosthetic of evil-looking teeth. But in the final moments I had to abandon the idea as being inappropriate. It was more important to stay in keeping with the text and, like Stevenson, not show Hyde's face." Things go from bad to worse: Jekyll withdraws further from his social circle; Hyde's criminal sprees culminate in murder; and Utteron and Lanyon fight to save their friend and unravel the mystery of Hyde's origins and disappearance. Jarvis's pacing is excellent, his characterization spot on, and his renditions of Jekyll and Hyde perfect; he creates two distinct characters that illustrate the story's exploration into the duality of human nature. Gr 4-8–Francis has done a careful job of retelling the originals in a concise if somewhat uninspired manner. In particular, she uses the epistolary styles of the original Dracula and Frankenstein in her retelling while using simple language and plot summaries that children will follow with ease. Students who read these books would be able to summarize the stories' main points, but may be left in the dark as to why these classics are held in such reverence, as the style is more reportage than fiction. Contributing to the dry tone are low-quality illustrations that lack detail and are unlikely to draw children's attention. Science is dangerous; English men are babies

Read this book. It is free, and it is short, and it is delightful.
In it, you will encounter the very strange domestic arrangements of wealthy single men in 19th-century London, a world in which one man required at least a half-dozen people to take care of him, like some kind of catastrophically disabled baby.
Also, the split-personality narrative anticipates post-modern theories of subjectivity by a century.
Like other examples of 19th century horror literature that focus on the dangers of scientific hubris, it is pretty enlightening to read today, but also fun.

a classic horror story

I am watching the new season of Penny Dreadful and they are featuring Dr. Jekyll this year. I realized I have never read this book, so I decided to pick it up in preparation for the show.

The writing feels very dense, and the pacing is slow. The reader slowly gets a feeling of dread, rather than outright scares. This is common with many of the horror stories of the period that I have read.

The story is interesting, with much musing on the nature of good and evil. It was a bit slower paced than I like, but this is a short book and easy to read in a day.

Don't trust the reviews of this product listing - they are a mish-mash of reviews of different versions of this book - different book sizes, font sizes, and content. The favorable reviews I saw don't match the content of the book I received (they refer to maps and other extra content - but there's nothing). Plus the font size is tiny (something not mentioned in any of the positive review - presumably because they are about a different edition). This is one you're better off buying in person at a bookstore so you know what you are getting.

About the Author
A geography teacher, head of year and head of department, Andy was a headteacher in east London for thirteen years. In the last year of headship, his school was judged outstanding in all categories and Andy was designated National Leader of Education. In 2009 he become a Director at the National College for School Leadership, leading on the London Challenge programme. He was subsequently responsible for setting up the government's flagship Teaching Schools programme. In 2012, he was appointed as Managing Director for Academies at United Learning. Andy established Leadership Matters, an organisation that focuses on providing strategic advice on educational leadership as well as practical input through executive coaching, leadership team development programmes and training. Andy combines this with part-time roles as Dean of the Leadership Faculty at Teaching Leaders and as the Senior Leadership Advisor for United Learning. Andy was invited to become a Fellow of the RSA in 2014 and has been a Board member for various organisations including the Teacher Training Agency, the National College for School Leadership and Partnerships for Schools. He is currently a Trustee for the Teacher Development Trust and the Teaching Awards. He has written three educational management books: 'Making School Work'; 'What Makes a Great School' and 'What Makes a Great Middle Leader?

The book did not disappoint me. The night I started the 183-page book

I flew from Manila to the US to attend grad school in December of 1974, acquired US citizenship in 1981, and have lived in the US since then. As Marcos imposed martial law in September of 1972, my first-hand experience of living under martial law spanned a brief 2 years and 2 months.

After the initial shock of the martial law declaration wore off, I had high hopes that the new structure and discipline would result in peace, prosperity, and security for the Philippines. Working as a sales engineer, the only negative impact of martial law I experienced was that it curtailed my business dinners and nights out as I had to make sure I was home by 12 midnight.

Many years later, I started reading books about the Marcos years before, during and after martial law. I was shocked to learn about the atrocities committed by the police and the military, the plundering of funds by both husband and wife, and the extent of Imelda’s wasteful extravagance.

I therefore approached Myles Garcia’s book with a curiosity to find out if Myles offered a new perspective on the Marcos-era years. The book did not disappoint me. The night I started the 183-page book, I stayed up to 2:00 am to finish the book in one sitting.

The book does an excellent job of organizing the information in an easy-to-follow manner. Even though the topic is “deadly” serious, Myles’ writing style is light and entertaining. It does not follow the heavy and ponderous tone so typical of the other books of this genre.

In my case, it fills in my personal knowledge gaps of Philippine events. For example, the book unabashedly identifies three pre-martial law cronies (called X, Y, & Z). I did not realize that Mr. Z was also involved in the Benguet-Bahamas deal. Another example I found both amusing and embarrassing is the story behind the upside-down tiara that Imelda wore for the 1971 Persepolis bash. There are many more of these gems in the book.

For Filipinos and for people with Filipino friends, the book will bring more substance and depth to your political discussions during your backyard barbeques and dinners.

For the history buff, it is a powerful reminder to all rational and righteous people that we should never let it happen again. It is particularly relevant to Filipinos who are voting in the Philippine elections in May 2016.
